Biological Science Technician (Plants)

Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work fulltime from approximately April to October. You will be in non-pay status the rest of the year, with the opportunity to work part-time during these month, as funding allows. This position works as a team lead for the North Coast and Cascades Network Exotic Plant Management Team duty stationed at Olympic National Park. The team is responsible for regularly treating invasive plants with herbicides in 9 national parks, including Ebey's Landing NHR, Lewis and Clark NHP, Fort Vancouver NHP, Lake Chelan NRA, Mount Rainier NP, North Cascades NP, Olympic NP, Ross Lake NRA, and San Juan Islands NHP. Duties for this position also include:
survey and monitoring; data collection, data input and manipulation, data quality control and data outputs for stakeholders including project reports with maps; crew project planning and leadership, preparing travel and other administrative tasks, and outreach activities. This position also is responsible for hazard tree surveys and reporting for several locations in the PNW. This position requires frequent travel (up to 16 days / month) often in backcountry settings, generally carrying 3-4 gallon herbicide backpack sprayers in full personal protective equipment, long work hours in variable weather conditions, and repetitive work. The incumbent must be able to lift at least 50 pounds, and be willing to work a highly flexible schedule. The incumbent will mix, load, and apply herbicides for the purposes of vegetation control as a regular part of work duties. All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/04/2020-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either full-time (or 40 hours a week) or part-time with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. SELECTIVE FACTOR:
This position uses chemical control methods to manage invasive plants, and requires the ability to mix, load, and apply pesticides for the purpose of invasive control. You must indicate whether you currently, or have in the past, used methods to control invasive plants with the use of pesticides. You must provide this experience in your resume. Experience:
At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as:
1) collecting monitoring data on assorted physical restoration and vegetation management projects using specified sampling techniques and procedures; 2) developing plans and coordinating a diversity of ecological restoration projects (e.g., scheduling personnel, purchasing supplies, developing action plans, implementing the project and completing written and photographic documentation); 3) Identify, document and recommend mitigations for PNW hazard trees and 4) leading field crews in exotic plant control or restoration projects. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION:
Successful completion of at least least one year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree with a major study in a related field such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours in any of these courses must be directly related to the position to be filled. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, f, first take the number of semester hours (or equivalent) earned towards a graduate degree and divide by 18 semester hours (or equivalent). Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
