Forestry Technician (Fire), GS-0462-06

This position is located in the Division of Natural Resources, Branch of Wildland Fire at Olympic National Park, but is part of the Olympic Interagency Fire organization that provides support for the Olympic National Forest, the NPS (Olympic, San Juan Island, and Lewis and Clark), and the Western Washington Zone of the Pacific Region Fish and Wildlife Service. The position works work directly with USFS, FWS, and NPS personnel in support of fire management activities within the interagency network. Leads a crew of wildland firefighters in engine operations, fire suppression, prescribed fire, and fuels management operations. Operates a wildland fire engine and directs others in the operation and use of engine equipment and fire engine operations. Inspects, services, and adjusts pumps, water lines, tanks and reels, and maintains engine readiness. Directs and performs wildland fire suppression in initial attack to control wildland fires. Implements prescribed burn plans and serves as burn boss or ignition specialist. Performs post burn evaluation. Evaluates fire weather, fire behavior, fuel models and terrain during attack/control situations. Makes and records fire weather observations and collects weather data for prescribed fire planning or monitoring activities. Assists with fuel treatment planning and preparation. Serves as work leader for a fire crew of three or more firefighters. Instructs and directs the crew in firefighting and fire program support operations. Makes work assignments, schedules personnel, provides instruction or training, and monitors work in progress. Coordinates project work with park staff and other involved personnel. Presents information to various groups in different settings. Writes burn plans, technical reports and correspondence. U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. You will be required to operate a government vehicle, therefore, must be able to acquire and hold a valid state Driver's License. If selected, a three (3) year driving history check will be required. Must currently possess or be able to obtain a First Responder and CPR Certification (or higher level certification) prior to entrance on duty date. Selectees may be expected to travel in (not pilot) a small single-engine aircraft. This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee is guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. While in pay status incumbent will work a full-time (40 hours per week). Work schedule and periods of non-pay status are contingent upon funding and operational needs. The applicant must have possessed all of the following National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) incident management qualifications and training requirements to be considered eligible for this position:
1. NWCG Firefighter, Type 1 (FFT1) 2. S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior Selectees for IFPM positions requiring currency will be required to obtain and maintain currency for the NWCG qualifications listed above. This position is covered by the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336 (c) and 5 U.S.C. 8412 (d) as a Primary/Rigorous Firefighter. Applicants must not have reached their 37th birthday upon appointment to this position unless there is sufficient prior Federal service in a covered position to permit retirement on or before the mandatory retirement age for this type of position. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
